The work for solo horn evokes the atmosphere of an expanse of time and a scope spanning a history of people who pioneered the great ancient eastern mountain range and forged a home and a life with strength and with tenderness. Open chord structure and squared rhythms that become jagged with work and toil and triumph move to lower keys, around the circle of fifths, the circle of life, the modes of existence, and into the lyrical and the light. Appalachia is a study of life itself; the performer makes it their own.
